Don't worry. With 8 GB of RAM your MBA will run Sims 3 well and it will not slow down other programs when you are not running it. Some heavy-duty games running on Macs can generate some heat, so if you find your Mac gets warm while you run games, consider buying one of the cooling pads/stands for it. Enjoy your new MBA.
P.S. Mountain Lion (10.8) is a great operating system release. Mavericks (10.9) was released about two months ago. Either will serve you well. I would not be in hurry to upgrade if what you are using is working well. Robo 3d printer software. If it ain't broke..
